Sculptra is an FDA-approved injectable used to stimulate collagen production and improve facial volume, particularly for wrinkles, folds, sagging and volume loss. This volume loss may be from aging, illness, or weight loss.
Around the age of 20 years old we start to lose our collagen at a rate of 1% per year. That means by the age 45, we have lost approximately 25%.
Sculptra's main ingredient is Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). PLLA is a biocompatible synthetic substance that increases collagen formation and works on the deep layer of the skin to restore the skin’s structure. PLLA has been utilized for over 30 years in dissolvable sutures. Unlike hyaluronic acid-based fillers, Sculptra activates fibroblasts, which are like the construction workers for our skin.
Sculptra is used in the framework of the face, from the temples down to the chin. This product should not be used around the lips or eyes. On average, two or three injection sessions over several months are recommended depending on the amount of collagen loss, followed by a once-a-year treatment for maintenance. The collagen formation develops gradually over several weeks leading to natural outcomes and improved skin texture, tone, and natural volume in the targeted area. Results can last for up to two years.
