A psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive, structured assessment used to understand a patient’s mental health concerns and overall functioning. It typically includes a detailed review of current symptoms, psychiatric and medical history, medications, substance use, psychosocial factors, and family history. The clinician also assesses mood, thought processes, behavior, cognition, and safety risks through clinical interview and observation.
The goal of the evaluation is to establish an accurate diagnosis (when appropriate), identify contributing factors, and develop an individualized treatment plan, which may include medication management, therapy recommendations, lifestyle interventions, and coordination of care.
