Hormone Replacement Therapy for Women
What is HRT?Hormone Replacement Therapy is a treatment used to replenish hormones that decrease naturally during menopause. It helps ease symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and vaginal dryness.
Types of HRT:Systemic HRT: Delivered via pills, patches, gels, creams, or sprays, treating symptoms throughout the body. Local (Vaginal) HRT: Low-dose estrogen applied directly to the vaginal area, targeting urinary and vaginal symptoms with minimal overall hormone absorption.
Benefits:Reduces menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and vaginal discomfort. Protects bone health by reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. May improve mood, cognitive function, and overall quality of life. Supports heart health by maintaining healthy cholesterol levels. Enhances skin, hair health, and sexual function.
Risks:Potential increased risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart disease, especially if started late after menopause or with certain hormone types. Slightly increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer, particularly with combined estrogen-progestogen therapy over long durations. Possible side effects include breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, or nausea.
Is HRT right for you?Deciding to use HRT is highly individual. It depends on factors such as age, time since menopause, personal and family health history, and the type and dose of hormones used. Starting HRT within 10 years of menopause onset generally offers more benefits than risks.
Hormone Replacement Therapy for Men
What is HRT for Men?Hormone Replacement Therapy for men, often called Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT), is designed to restore testosterone levels that naturally decline with age or due to medical conditions. Low testosterone can cause symptoms such as fatigue, decreased muscle mass, low libido, mood changes, and reduced bone density.
Benefits:Improves energy, mood, and overall sense of well-being. Increases muscle mass and strength. Enhances libido and sexual function. Supports bone density to reduce fracture risk. May improve cognitive function and quality of life.
Risks and Side Effects:Possible acne, fluid retention, or breast tissue enlargement (gynecomastia). Can affect fertility by suppressing sperm production. Requires monitoring for prostate health and red blood cell count. Some cardiovascular risks, though recent research shows TRT can be safe when monitored properly. May worsen sleep apnea in some individuals.
Is HRT right for you?TRT is recommended for men diagnosed with clinically low testosterone and symptoms of hypogonadism.
